Basal Metabolic Rate (BMI) & Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) | El Paso, Tx (2020)

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMI) & Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) | El Paso, Tx (2020)
Dr. Alex Jimenez and Dr. Mario Ruja discuss basal metabolic rate, BMI, and BIA. Body mass and body fat can be measured in a variety of ways, however, several measurement tools may ultimately be inaccurate for many athletes. According to Dr. Alex Jimenez and Dr. Mario Ruja, calculating an individual’s body mass and body fat utilizing various tools is essential to determine overall health and wellness. BMI uses a person’s height divided by twice their weight. The results may be inaccurate for athletes because their body mass and body fat is different, in terms of weight, compared to the average person. Dr. Alex Jimenez and Dr. Mario Ruja demonstrate that BIA, or bioelectrical impedance analysis, and various other tools, such as the DEXA test, the Tanita scale, and the InBody, among others, can help more accurately determine an athlete’s body mass and body fat. Basal metabolic rate, BMI, and BIA is essential for parents that have young athletes as well as for the general population. Healthcare professionals that have these tools available can ultimately help provide individuals with the results they may need to maintain overall health and wellness. – Podcast Insight

Basal Metabolic Rate BMI & BIA By Dr. Alex Jimenez Chiropractor | El Paso, Tx (2020)

Basal Metabolic Rate BMI & BIA By Dr. Alex Jimenez Chiropractor | El Paso, Tx (2020)
Dr. Alex Jimenez, chiropractor in El Paso, TX, discusses BIA, BMI and basal metabolic rate with staff. Dr. Alex Jimenez, health coach Kenna Vaughn, Astrid Ornelas, Truide Torres, and biochemist Alexander Isaiah Jimenez all take part in a round table podcast discussion of the importance of measuring BMI, BIA, and basal metabolic rate. BMI or body mass index is frequently utilized to determine an individual’s relative weight according to their height. Healthcare professionals commonly utilize BMI, however, BMI may not be accurate for athletes because their body mass according to their height may demonstrate that they have excess weight or obesity utilizing BMI. BIA is the preferred analysis tool used to determine an athlete’s relative weight according to their height. Excess weight and obesity is a well-known risk factor that can ultimately increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, among other health issues, including diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Dr. Alex Jimenez, health coach Kenna Vaughn, Astrid Ornelas, Truide Torres, and biochemist Alexander Isaiah Jimenez ultimately discuss in further detail how determining an individual’s BIA, BMI, and basal metabolic rate can help promote overall health and wellness as well as support weight loss for the general population and athletes alike. – Podcast Insight

Learning About Sciatica | Video

Education About Sciatica | El Paso, Tx

After a person is diagnosed with sciatica or sciatic nerve pain caused by another health issue, like a herniated disc, a chiropractor or doctor of chiropractic will often use spinal adjustments to treat back pain and other common health issues within the scope of chiropractic care. Spinal adjustments are safe and effective techniques used by chiropractors to help relieve sciatica and its painful symptoms. Chiropractors also use other techniques, together with the spinal adjustments, to help relieve sciatic nerve pain, such as ice and/or cold therapy, ultrasound, and a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body. Because the sciatic nerve connects the legs and feet to the central nervous system (CNS) any health issues that happen along the length of the sciatic nerve can cause many symptoms associated with sciatica. Sciatica is a collection of symptoms instead of a single health issue. Sciatica is characterized by pain, discomfort, tingling sensations, and numbness. The health issues associated with sciatica are commonly treated by chiropractors and physical therapists. Dr. Alex Jimenez, a doctor of chiropractic in El Paso, TX, commonly helps patients with sciatic nerve pain find the proper health care they deserve. Dr. Alex Jimenez and his office staff have helped many patients find pain relief from their sciatica symptoms through the use of a variety of treatment methods and techniques, also educating them about their health issues and what they can do about them at home. The following video above discusses sciatica or sciatic nerve pain and how Dr. Alex Jimenez has helped patients find sciatica relief through chiropractic care and spinal adjustments as well as other techniques. Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain can be caused by various health issues, such as a herniated disc or disk herniation and a spinal misalignment or subluxation.

[00:00:25] So today I want to speak to you guys about sciatica. What is sciatica? Sciatica is compression of the spinal nerve that runs all the way to the feet or sometimes it stops at the calf. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and it is instrumental to the body because it connects the feet to the central nervous system. What are the symptoms of sciatic nerve? It is lower back pain. It is hip pain. It is pain in the buttocks. It is pain that radiates all the way to your feet. Pain that is caused by sitting up, making it difficult for a person to even try to stand from a sitting position. There are a lot of patients that walk here, walk into the clinic and are unaware of what is wrong with them. They’re just like, “You know what? My hip is hurting.” They are unable to walk without any type of help. I’ve seen patients with crutches. I’ve seen patients on wheelchairs and with help from other people. You know, thankfully, they have loved ones that are able to help them and carry them sometimes in here.

[00:01:30] Dr. Jimenez has a great team. We have stated that before. And that is not a lie. He has great techniques to relieve the discomfort, the inflammation, the swelling. Another thing that we do for our patients is we allow them to know how to go home and in due case that they do have pain while at home. We also give them the knowledge, we tell them how to stretch. We give them advice as far as what to do? How do you do stretches before they go to bed? In the morning, when they wake up, they know what to do. So they try to avoid those things that have cost them pain and the discomfort, you know, trying to avoid those things while they come and see us. Dr. Jimenez is very hands. He will see you. He will talk to you. He will treat you like his own family.

Doctor of Chiropractic for Sciatic Nerve Pain | Video

Sciatica Pain Chiropractor | El Paso, Tx (2019)

Many patients will visit a healthcare professional after experiencing low back pain and a variety of other symptoms where they will then find out through a proper diagnosis that they have sciatica, or sciatic nerve pain, due to another health issue, such as a spinal misalignment or a herniated disc. Chiropractors use spinal adjustments to treat low back pain, sciatica, and other well-known health issues frequently associated with the musculoskeletal and nervous system. The careful and gentle manual manipulations that a doctor of chiropractic utilizes can help realign an individual’s spine to relieve their painful symptoms. Chiropractors can also use several other treatment options together with the spinal adjustments to give patients the relief they deserve, including ice/cold therapy, ultrasound, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, otherwise known as a TENS unit. If a person’s sciatic nerve pain, or sciatica, is caused by excess weight or obesity, the doctor of chiropractic can also recommend diet and lifestyle modifications to help promote weight loss and overall well-being. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve found inside the human body. It ultimately helps connect the nerves in the legs and feet to the nerves of the rest of the body through the central nervous system, also known as the CNS. According to many healthcare professionals and researchers alike, several varieties of health issues, including a spinal misalignment, also known as a subluxation, or a herniated disc, as well as various other health issues that affect any region of the human body near the sciatic nerve, can cause inflammation that will eventually compress the sciatic nerve, causing a health issue that is best known as sciatica or sciatic nerve pain. Sciatica, or best referred to as sciatic nerve pain, is a collection of various symptoms instead of one variety of health issues. Sciatic nerve pain, or sciatica, is characterized by pain and discomfort, tingling sensations, and numbness as well as other common symptoms. The video above discusses the relief that patient Edgar M. Reyes experienced after visiting Dr. Alex Jimenez, a chiropractor in El Paso, TX, to ultimately help treat his sciatica or sciatic nerve pain, among other musculoskeletal and nervous system problems.

[00:00:20] Edgar M.Reyes. I work for the city of El Paso in the airport, taking care of the runways in Texas. One of my wife’s friends recommended over and over how good he was. So I gave it a shot. I have really bad sciatica and it was killing me. I couldn’t walk. But he’s been helping me out. I can walk down. Maybe like three years. The last six months really bad. Oh, yeah. I couldn’t even walk as I said. I couldn’t walk more than 20, 25 yards. It was really affecting me. I had to get some help. It really gives me hope. Man, I can’t say enough about Dr. Jimenez. I mean, he’s been helping me out. I can walk.

Sciatica, or best called sciatic nerve pain, is a group of several symptoms instead of one type of condition, disease, or syndrome. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve found within the human body and it helps connect the legs and feet to the rest of the body by the central nervous system, also called the CNS. According to many doctors and scientists alike, several different types of health issues, such as a spinal misalignment or a herniated disc as well as several other health issues that affect any area of the human body near the sciatic nerve, can cause inflammation that will push and press against the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve pain, or sciatica, is commonly identified by pain and discomfort, tingling sensations, and numbness as well as other common symptoms. Many patients will visit a doctor with low back pain and several other symptoms where they will then find out that they have sciatica, or sciatic nerve pain, because of another health issue like a spinal misalignment or a herniated disc. Nutraceuticals for Sciatica

Nutraceuticals for Sciatica | El Paso, TX Chiropractor

Nutraceuticals can help relieve several different types of chronic pain, including sciatica or sciatic nerve pain. Stephen DeFelice, MD, coined the term in 1989, which is a combination of the words nutrition and pharmaceutical. He defined nutraceuticals as food that offers a variety of health benefits as well as prevention and/or treatment of health issues. Although these foods are considered to be natural products, it’s essential to discuss nutraceutical options for chronic pain, including sciatica or sciatic nerve pain, with a healthcare professional to avoid any side-effects or interactions with drugs/medications.

Several nutraceuticals are also considered to be dietary supplements. According to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) is a product that is taken orally in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form which is made-up of any chemical ingredient that adds to what a person normally gets in their diet, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs as well as substances made from organs or glands and enzymes. Dietary supplements can also be an extract or concentrate. Several examples of dietary supplements include vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, and fish oil, best known as omega-3 fatty acids.

Nutraceuticals aren’t only limited to dietary supplements, as Dr. Stephen DeFelice previously described. It can also include genetically engineered food, such as food with added antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Nutraceuticals offer people extra nutrients that the body needs to use as fuel for energy. Nutrients, such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are broken down by the body’s metabolism, a process that uses energy to regulate breathing and heartbeat, among other essential bodily functions. In the following article, we will discuss how nutraceuticals can help improve sciatica or sciatic nerve pain.

How Nutraceuticals Can Help Improve Sciatica

When people have chronic pain, including sciatica or sciatic nerve pain, the body will generally require more nutrients to repair itself. Nutraceuticals can help supplement the nutrients people are already getting from their diet by giving the body more nutrients to use. According to several research studies, nutraceuticals can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with low back pain and other health issues. Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain is a collection of symptoms, rather than a single condition, which is caused by a variety of health issues, including a bulging disk, herniated disk, or degenerative disk disease.

“Nutraceuticals, as well as dietary supplements, work best when used in combination with proper diet, regular exercise or physical activity, and stress management”, stated Carrie Bowler, DO, a physician with One Medical Group in New York. Although these foods are considered to be natural products, it’s essential to discuss nutraceutical options for chronic pain, including sciatica or sciatic nerve pain, with a healthcare professional to avoid any side-effects or interactions with drugs/medications. Below, we will discuss several nutraceuticals that can ultimately help improve sciatica or sciatic nerve pain.

Nutraceuticals for Sciatica

Vitamin D

According to researchers, vitamin D deficiency can make sciatica or sciatic nerve pain worse. One research study published in Pain Physician in 2013 found that chronic pain may be associated with an increased prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in people with spinal stenosis in their lumbar spine or low back, a common cause of sciatica or sciatic nerve pain. A healthcare professional will determine an individual’s recommended dosage of vitamin D based on their individual needs and requirements. Sunlight exposure and vitamin D-fortified foods, such as vitamin D milk, may also help supply the nutrient.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Healthcare professionals recommend increasing the intake of omega-3 fatty acids to help reduce inflammation that can ultimately cause chronic pain. Many dietary supplements are available in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form. Make sure to talk with your healthcare professional about the proper dosage of omega-3 fatty acids because increased doses of this nutrient can increase the risk of bleeding and other complications. It can also interfere with any blood-thinning drugs and/or medications. You can also increase the intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating tuna, salmon, sardines, and dark leafy greens.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are organic compounds that are naturally produced in the body. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, glucosamine can be found in the fluid around the joints while chondroitin can be found in the cartilage surrounding the joints. Navid Farahmand, MD, an interventional pain management physician with the Brain and Spine Institute of California in Newport Beach, stated that, although there aren’t many research studies on the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin for people with back pain, others have shown a meaningful impact on chronic knee pain.

Turmeric or Curcumin

Turmeric or curcumin, the active ingredient in the yellow-ish plant, is one of the most recommended dietary supplements for chronic pain, including sciatica or sciatic nerve pain. The spice, which is commonly used in Indian curry dishes, can be taken as a powder in capsules, mixed into tea, or as a liquid extract. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAAM) reports that turmeric is considered safe for most adults but prolonged use could cause an upset stomach. As a dietary supplement, it’s not recommended for people with gallbladder disease because it can make the condition worse.

Additional Topic Discussion: Chronic Pain

Sudden pain is a natural response of the nervous system which helps to demonstrate possible injury. By way of instance, pain signals travel from an injured region through the nerves and spinal cord to the brain. Pain is generally less severe as the injury heals, however, chronic pain is different than the average type of pain. With chronic pain, the human body will continue sending pain signals to the brain, regardless if the injury has healed. Chronic pain can last for several weeks to even several years. Chronic pain can tremendously affect a patient’s mobility and it can reduce flexibility, strength, and endurance.

Gut Zoomer for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

Gut Zoomer | El Paso, TX Chiropractor

Dr. Alex Jimenez utilizes a series of tests to help evaluate gut health associated with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The Vibrant Gut ZoomerTM offers a report that includes dietary recommendations and other natural supplementation like prebiotics, probiotics, and polyphenols. The gut microbiome is mainly found in the large intestine and it has more than 1000 species of bacteria that play a fundamental role in the human body, from shaping the immune system and affecting the metabolism of nutrients to strengthening the intestinal mucosal barrier (gut-barrier). It is essential to understand how the number of bacteria that symbiotically live in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract influences gut health because imbalances in the gut microbiome may ultimately lead to gastrointestinal (GI) tract symptoms, skin conditions, autoimmune disorders, immune system imbalances, and multiple inflammatory disorders.

Sciatica Symptoms and Foot Pronation

Sciatica Symptoms and Foot Pronation | El Paso, TX Chiropractor

Sciatica can commonly occur due to the over-pronation of the foot, which causes flat-footedness and an abnormal gait and posture. This theory is widely accepted by podiatrists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and even sports medicine specialists. However, it is doubted by many healthcare professionals, especially in mild to moderate circumstances.

Flat-footedness, also referred to as fallen arches, can be demonstrated unilaterally or bilaterally, and this health issue can cause foot pain with a variety of other symptoms. However, many healthcare professionals still doubt that flat-footedness is considerable enough to cause sciatica, being how the human body can compensate for structural and functional irregularity. The purpose of the following article is to demonstrate how foot pronation can cause sciatica and other symptoms.

What is Foot Pronation?

Foot pronation is characterized as a flattening of the frontal arch of the foot and inwards turning of the big toe. Pronated feet seem to roll inward at the ball of the foot, making the knife-edge of the foot seem to bend outwards at the ankle joint. The heel bone is further towards the outside of the human body in placement when compared to the ankle bone. This type of foot abnormality may be shown on one foot (unilateral expression) or in both feet (bilateral expression).

Over-pronation can range considerably from mild to moderate and severe. It’s fundamental to understand that the action of pronation is a normal part of standing and walking. However, in the following article, we will discuss how over-pronation or flat-footedness can cause various health issues, including sciatica, a collection of painful signs and symptoms.

Pronated Foot Mechanisms and Sciatica

When the feet don’t contact the floor, the human body will have to compensate from the feet to the top of the head. Research studies have associated foot pronation with sciatica and many other debilitating signs and symptoms related to this health issue. Moreover, over-pronation affects the angle at which the foot meets the ankle.

In several patients, the joints of the spine, sacroiliac, hip, knee, and the soft tissues that maintain and support these joints will adjust to the over-pronation of the foot. This can develop a variety of signs and symptoms. For sciatica, several of the mechanisms make up the several consequences of anatomical tilting and compensatory activities, including:

  • Postural changes which can aggravate nerve root compression or impingement in the lumbar spine
  • Postural and gait changes which can affect the sacroiliac joint between the pelvic ilium and sacrum
  • Postural and functional changes can affect the piriformis muscle and cause piriformis syndrome.

The sciatic nerve may be affected by joint or soft tissue health issues. Compression or impingement is merely one of the mechanisms created by muscular imbalances, joint misalignments, and other prospective outcomes of over-pronation of the foot. Some people may also confuse other health issues for sciatica. These can also affect the hip, the knee, the ankle, and the foot due to compensation of the human body in response to over-pronation of the foot.

Foot Pronation Risks and Concerns

Many healthcare professionals believe that severe instances of foot pronation are the cause of foot pain, in addition to other well-known signs and symptoms. Nonetheless, healthcare professionals also discuss that mild to moderate cases of over-pronation, accounting for approximately 98 percent of diagnoses, are likely to be non-factors in sciatica signs and symptoms.

Other healthcare professionals discuss that sciatica caused by foot pronation is plausible in severe over-pronation health issues, despite apparent postural and gait abnormalities. These healthcare professionals believe that sciatica caused by foot pronation, although not frequently well-known, is possible in several cases, supporting the findings of several research studies. It is logical and plausible based on structural and functional evidence and absent in many instances where sciatica signs and symptoms would seem completely justifiable based on cases of acute flat-footedness.

Foot pronation, or flat-footedness, can cause overall imbalances in the human body. Pronated feet or flat feet can ultimately cause pain and discomfort in the spine, hips, knees, and feet, as well as shift the entire human body out of alignment. Research studies have demonstrated that women with flat feet are approximately 50 percent more likely than those without to have low back pain and sciatica symptoms.  – Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C., C.C.S.T. Low Back Pain

The purpose of the article is to describe how foot pronation can be associated with sciatica and other health issues. Sciatica is a collection of symptoms characterized by pain, tingling sensation, and numbness. Additional Topic Discussion: Foot Orthotics

Low back pain and sciatica are common health issues that affect many individuals worldwide. However, did you know that chronic pain may be due to foot problems? Health issues originating in the foot may ultimately cause imbalances in the spine, such as poor posture, which can cause the well-known symptoms of low back pain and sciatica. Custom foot orthotics, individually designed with 3-arch support, can help promote overall health and wellness by supporting and promoting good posture and correcting foot problems. Custom foot orthotics can ultimately help improve low back pain and sciatica.
