Patient learning about ear points in auriculotherapy treatment.

As a clinician dedicated to integrative and functional medicine, I am continually exploring evidence-based, minimally invasive therapies to alleviate pain and restore function for my patients. This post explores the innovative technique of Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA), a powerful auriculotherapy protocol developed for rapid, effective pain relief. We will explore the physiological basis of BFA, its specific application points, and the procedure itself. I will also share insights from my clinical practice at Injury Medical Clinic, showcasing how we integrate advanced techniques like BFA into our comprehensive care model. This model combines my expertise as a Doctor of Chiropractic and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with the medical oversight of our esteemed Medical Director, Dr. Maria Guadalupe Cardenas, MD, an internist with over 40 years of experience. Together, we provide a multidisciplinary approach that merges chiropractic care, functional medicine, and traditional medical practices to achieve superior patient outcomes.
Hello, I’m Dr. Alex Jimenez. With a background spanning chiropractic, advanced practice nursing, and functional medicine, my mission is to bring the latest, most effective treatments to our patients in El Paso, Texas. Today, I want to share a fascinating, highly effective technique we use to manage acute and chronic pain: Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA). This isn’t just a traditional acupuncture method; it’s a specific, evidence-based protocol that has shown remarkable results, from the front lines of military medicine to our clinical setting.
At Injury Medical Clinic, we believe in a team-based, patient-centered approach. As a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) and a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner (APRN, FNP-BC), I can view health through multiple lenses. To ensure the highest standard of care, our practice operates under the medical direction of Dr. Maria Guadalupe Cardenas, MD. Dr. Cardenas is a board-certified internist (NPI #1164426749, Texas MD License #J2933) with more than four decades of experience. As our collaborative physician, she provides essential medical oversight to ensure our protocols are safe, effective, and well integrated.
This multidisciplinary setup is the cornerstone of modern integrative healthcare. It allows us to seamlessly blend:
This collaborative model ensures that when we introduce a therapy like BFA, it is part of a holistic treatment plan supervised by both chiropractic and medical professionals.
Battlefield Acupuncture is a specialized form of auriculotherapy, which is acupuncture performed on the external ear. Dr. Richard Niemtzow, a retired Air Force colonel and physician, developed it to provide rapid, potent pain relief in settings where traditional pain medications might be impractical or cause undesirable side effects—such as on the battlefield. However, its applications have expanded significantly and are now used in emergency rooms, post-operative recovery, and integrative pain clinics like ours.
The technique involves inserting minimal, semi-permanent needles, called ASP needles (Aiguille Semi-Permanente), into specific points on the ear. These needles are tiny, dart-like studs that are designed to stay in place for several days, providing continuous stimulation to the targeted points.
The ear is a fascinating microsystem that reflects the entire body. It is richly innervated by several major nerves, including branches of the vagus nerve, the trigeminal nerve, and cervical spinal nerves. When an ASP needle is inserted into a BFA point, it sends a powerful signal directly to the central nervous system—specifically to key pain-processing centers in the brain.
The five points used in the BFA protocol are strategically chosen to modulate the brain’s perception of pain. These points are thought to directly influence areas like the thalamus, the cingulate gyrus, and other regions involved in processing and filtering sensory information.
By stimulating these points in a specific sequence, BFA aims to reset the central nervous system’s processing of pain, leading to significant, often immediate, relief.
The BFA protocol is systematic and designed for clear decision-making. The process is straightforward, but precision is key.
The protocol involves up to five specific points, typically addressed in a particular order:
Here is a look at how a typical BFA session unfolds in our clinic:
From my clinical experience, I’ve found that many patients achieve substantial relief with just the first one or two needles—most commonly the Cingulate Gyrus and Thalamus points. A patient I have treated for some time for chronic pain responds exceptionally well to bilateral needle insertions in just these two points. We perform this treatment for her every two to three weeks, and it provides consistent, lasting relief, allowing her to function with significantly less pain.
The ASP needles are designed to stay in place for approximately three to seven days. They often fall out on their own as the body naturally exfoliates skin cells. This provides a continuous, low-level stimulation that prolongs the pain-relieving effects of the treatment.
Battlefield Acupuncture is a powerful tool, but its true potential is unlocked when it is part of a comprehensive, integrative treatment plan.
With Dr. Cardenas as our collaborative physician, we can also co-manage patients who may require prescription medications or have complex medical histories, ensuring our integrative therapies complement and enhance their overall medical care.
Battlefield Acupuncture represents a significant advancement in non-pharmacological pain management. It is a testament to how ancient principles, when refined with modern, evidence-based research, can offer profound healing. Its ability to provide rapid, effective, and lasting pain relief with minimal side effects makes it an invaluable tool in our integrative practice.
At Injury Medical Clinic, our unique collaborative structure, combining the expertise of chiropractic, functional medicine, and internal medicine under Dr. Cardenas’s direction, allows us to leverage powerful therapies like BFA to their fullest potential. We don’t just treat symptoms; we treat the whole person, creating a personalized journey toward pain-free living and optimal health.
If you are struggling with acute or chronic pain, I encourage you to explore how an integrated approach can make a difference.
